Street Wheels Culture Spot
is a community-based bike and skate shop serving youth in Detroit and surrounding areas. We provide educational programs in entrepreneurship, bike mechanics and customization, and skateboard building while fostering fitness, creativity, and personal growth.
Ride and Build Initiative Program
Street Wheels Culture Spot's signature program, the Ride and Build Initiative, is a year-round mentorship and skill-building effort designed to engage Detroit youth during the critical after-school hours. By using the authentic culture of Big BMX biking and skateboarding, we provide a safe, accessible hub where participants gain hands-on experience in mechanics, customization, and community service. Youth leave the program with increased confidence, tangible skills, and a strong sense of community, connecting them to positive peers and professionals through local workshops and exciting out-of-state trips.
Core Program Activities
The Ride and Build Initiative centers around the following key activities:
Bike Mechanics/Builds: Hands-on instruction where youth learn foundational mechanics, safety, and are guided in building their own Big BMX bikes.
Skateboard Building: Workshops focused on the construction and design of skateboards, teaching both craft and culture.
Bike Customizing: Creative sessions dedicated to personalizing bikes with vinyl, paint, parts, and accessories.
Bike Ride Outs: Weekly organized group rides to explore the city, building community and promoting fitness.
Skateboarding Workshops: Sessions to teach or improve riding skills and introduce the cultural history of the sport.
Out of State Trips: Opportunities for participants to travel and connect with broader bike and skate communities.
Youth Mentorship Programs: Transitional roles where experienced youth mentor new recruits, fostering leadership and teamwork.
Accessible and Affordable Community Repairs: Youth-led repair events that give back to the community, teaching service and generating revenue for program sustainability.

Even though we are new Street Wheels has made a significant impact by:
Bridging Community Gaps: The organization has successfully brought diverse groups of riders together through hands-on workshops and repair events, fostering a strong sense of community.
Hosting Community Events: A major accomplishment was participating in and helping organize the Cinco de Mayo ride, which brought the entire cycling community together and provided a platform for riders to share skills.
Establishing a Home Base: Street Wheels has a physical space that serves as both a storefront and a community hub. This location offers bike services and workshops, and also partners with MCSDA's Beat Lab to provide access to music production and other creative skills, further connecting different communities.
Successful Launch: The organization's soft launch was a major success, demonstrating strong community support and confirming the need for a space dedicated to street cycling culture.
